Why sometimes doing nothing is better than farming it out to someone who just doesn’t “get it”
Like many blogs, I sometimes leave mine dormant while real life takes up my time and priorities. Yet the posts aren’t abandoned. They are gaining interest from “blog commenters”. If you’re a blogger, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s those random comments of bizarre, disconnected praise with unrelated site links, and strong hope that your ego will take over and say “They loooove my posts. I’ll let this one slip through.”
Yet I say, “Not so fast.”
Getting links in blog posts are great, especially when they are topically relevant, and provide a level of “engagement” and “connection” – so your readers can participate in the conversation or get further information on the topic. The ones that work to achieve that level of engagement and connection are the valuable ones. Why?
- They show a relevant topical connection, particularly when linked via a key word or phrase.
- They allow people looking for similar content to follow a scent trail to other related content.
- They show relevant conversations and engagement.
So what’s irrelevant? Aside from the blatant, shameless self-promotion, here’s a few of my favorites…

I actually like what you have bought here, certainly like what you are saying and the best way during which you say it. You’re making it enjoyable and you still care for to keep it sensible. OK, “dead written” doesn’t sound like a compliment…
Who the heck is actually writing this gibberish? And why is anyone wasting time or money on it?
So here’s the point: people do actually look at these comments and will not post them. If you are hiring your commenting out to people who think compliments who’ll get them everywhere, or to people who are obviously not writing from any particular point of view that is relevant – let alone lack intelligible writing skills to get the job done – you are wasting your time and money.
Better ways to get links from blogs
- Start a GENUINE conversation;
- Engage with other bloggers;
- Share ideas, not links.
It’s not all about the links. The more that is your focus, the less success you will have in establishing any linking prominence.
